SUPERB RUSKIN BRITISH ART POTTERY LARGE CRYSTALLINE VASE - ART DECO PERIOD DATED 1933
"A superb late Ruskin Pottery crystalline vase of art deco period shape. It is dated 1933 and will have come from one of the very last experimental kiln firings during the last year of production at this wonderful British art pottery. This large vase is one super British art pottery example with striking contemporary, crystalline, decorative finish. Similar shapes are recorded in Ruskin Pottery literature. Ruskin art pottery production was based on experimentation in firing and decorative glaze finishes so that every crystalline vase is effectively unique." Antiques Expert Hamilton Bear.

References: William Howson Taylor was the guiding hand behind Ruskin Pottery art wares produced circa 1900-1933 at Smethwick, Birmingham, West Midlands, England. An artist potter renown for his experimentation with the chemistry and glaze recipes that make Ruskin Pottery unique and special. Surviving examples of Ruskin art pottery products are highly collectable. Experimental firing made output expensive and unpredictable. Kiln losses inevitably were high; results were often difficult if not impossible to repeat and many pieces display minor defects and damages. A common feature of all pieces is varying glaze effects and colouring. Howson Taylor the artist-potter effectively subsidised production and experimentation at a loss.
Dimensions: height 207 mm max. width 150 mm max.
Marks: as illustrated including impressed date stamp.
Condition: No significant defects in our opinion. There is one tight short hairline to the rim. This is difficult to spot and is lost in any general display view. There is a cross hairline to the glaze to the base that does not penetrate through to the pot and was probably present from firing. The pot itself remains very sound and stable with no restoration. We rate this A1 for display and a great example.
