RARE TURNER STAFFORDSHIRE ANTIQUE POTTERY SPRIG-MOULDED JASPER WARE STYLE SERPENT JUG C.1785-1800

"A rare Staffordshire antique pottery sprig-moulded jug with distinctive serpent spout and handle made by John Turner of Lane End circa 1785-1800. This is a very unusual piece and perhaps a unique survivor. The jasper ware style design despite resembling that usually found on stoneware or caneware is on a porcellanous and translucent body with a glazed finish. The serpent spout and larger applied sprigged decorations to the sides have both been found on other marked Turner pieces. A wonderful antique for the knowledgeable antique pottery collector that is worthy of a museum reference collection." Antiques Expert Hamilton Bear.

References: A marked Turner piece with identical serpent spout and handle is illustrated in An Illustrated Guide to British Jugs, From Medieval Times To The Twentieth Century, R.K. Henrywood page 92 plate 245. Identical sprigged decoration is illustrated on marked Turner jugs page 91 plates 240 and 243.
Dimensions: height jug 95 mm max. width 127 mm max.
Marks: none.
Condition:  Displays well as illustrated but there are some old damages and repairs. Old glued repair to handle that has been off and restuck. Spout of jug is chipped around the mouth of the serpent and there is one short tight hairline from rim to the right of spout. However, the piece is basically sound and a rare fortunate survivor  unlikely to be repeated.
