AN ENGLISH DELFTWARE TINGLAZED DEEP DISH AFTER A DESIGN BY JEAN PILLEMENT C. 1760-65

"An English Delft tin-glazed deep dish decorated in blue and white with chinoiserie landscape. This distinctive design is taken directly from an illustration in The Ladies' Amusement by Jean Pillement. Identification and attribution of English Delft or tin-glazed earthenware, to specific areas and maker is always difficult. This may be London Lambeth, Liverpool or even Irish deltfware. All these sources have been identified as producing items of delft to this design." Antiques Expert Hamilton Bear.

References: The Ladies' Amusement, provides the source for the design on this dish which is taken directly from plate 175. First published around 1760 and known to have been reprinted in 1762; this eighteenth century clipart book contained 1500 plus engravings of design motifs, landscapes, etc. It was a design sensation: images were eagerly copied and adapted by eager ceramic artists onto both pottery and porcelain. Jean Pillement (1719-1808) the French artist was the talent behind many of the most copied chinoiserie designs. Examples also exist of decoration that can be credited back to Pillement on Worcester, Bow, Vauxhall and Chelsea porcelain.
Dimensions: width 227 mm max. approximately 9 inches, depth 40 mm max. approximately 1.9 inches.
Marks: none .
Condition: Excellent condition for display with no significant wear to decoration. There is a short fine hairline at right angles to the dish edge. Minor rim chips/flaking/fritting to edge rim: normal and acceptable found on delftware. This is a wonderful and rare reference example.
